Beloved
Listen here:
When I was a child, I often pondered my name, Amy, and felt that it was too bubbly and superficial for what I felt expressed my interior world. I remember reading stories of Native American traditions of naming their children according to their physical characteristics or circumstances at birth. I wished for such meaning in my name. As a child, when I asked my mother why the name Amy was chosen, she could not offer any satisfying reason which only added to my sense of purposeless-ness. Then, one year I received a bookmark with my name on it and its significance, “Beloved”. My heart opened wide and I fell head first into my name and then into my purpose: to love and to be loved.
Today, when I feel lost and confused, I ask myself where love resides. When I feel joyful and at peace, I give thanks for the presence of love. When I feel tired and hopeless, I seek the embrace of love. When I feel energized and active, I feel the impulse of love.
What does your name mean to you? Reflect on what gives you your sense of purpose and listen to what emerges.
